Back to Work Class

Vanessa Prinz, IBCLC and part-time working mother of four, leads our monthly Back to Work class.  The class is ideal for moms going back to work in four to eight weeks.  The class is typically offered on the third Tuesday of the month from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Sweet Pea Yoga Studio in North Center (3717 N. Ravenswood, Suite 213-214).  Vanessa will lead participants through a step-by-step guide to returning to work.  Some of the topics will include:

  • how much milk to store and offer per day

  • planning with your employer and your legal rights

  • pumping equipment, fit, technique and frequency, hand expression

  • bottle introduction and technique

  • breast milk management and storage

  • caregiver training

  • milk supply concerns

The maximum class size is fifteen, and many  moms choose to connect with each other after the class for on-going support.  Babies are welcome in the class though coming without the baby may allow you to focus more.  You are welcome to breastfeed or pump during class if needed.  Refunds cannot be given for missed class.  If you are unable to attend, we will offer you a make up class at the next scheduled offering or will arrange for materials to be sent to you and schedule a 15 minute follow up phone consultation with Vanessa to answer questions you may have about the materials.  To register for an upcoming class, please click here.

Back to Work Class
I attended the December back to work class and I just want to say a big THANK YOU! Today is my second day back to work, and some of the tips I learned are already paying off. Starting on a Thursday rather than a Monday made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming... my caregivers learned how to pace feed, and because of the knowledge I gained from the class I felt much more confident in planning my freezer stash, sending the correct amount of milk to daycare and setting realistic pumping goals. When we reunited again yesterday and were able to nurse again I felt so proud knowing that I was still able to provide for him while I was away. I have my eyes on my next breastfeeding goal of six months, and the success I have achieved so far is definitely in part due to all the wonderful resources provided by JOC, including the Lactation Station and the Back to Work class.
